Megan Jones and Irish Jester charge out of the water during the cross-country phase of the 2008 Eventing competition in Hong Kong. Jones was fourth in the individual and helped the Australian Team to Silver.
Emma Snowsill won Australia's first triathlon gold medal when she swam, cycled and ran to the podium at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Fellow Aussie Emma Moffatt took bronze.
Stephanie Rice won an astonishing three gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The Queenslander won the 200m and 400m individual medley events, both in world-record times and then led the 4x200m team to a stunning victory. The Aussies smashed the world record by more than five seconds, delivering the USA's first defeat in the event in Olympic history.
Ken Wallace, a Gold Coast lifesaver who barely knew the sport existed eight years before, made history by winning gold and bronze medals in the 500 metres and 1000 metres single kayak events respectively at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He was the first Australian to win medals in both Olympic forms of individual paddling at the same Games.
Dual Olympian Nikita Cuffe won a bronze medal for Australia in women’s water polo in 2008. The bronze medal final against Hungary was decided in a penalty shoot-out, the final score being 12-11. The bronze was Australia’s second women’s water polo medal following its Sydney 2000 gold.
Scott Brennan and David Crawshay rowed to gold in the double scull at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Brennan and Crawshay had finished first in the quadruple scull B Final at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004 and were determined to turn that mediocre performance into gold in Beijing. Their win emulated that of the ‘Pocket Rockets’, Peter Antonie and Stephen Hawkins, at Barcelona 1992.
Libby Trickett won four medals in Beijing including two gold to add to her gold and bronze medals from the Athens Olympic Games. One of Australia's finest athletes in and out of the pool, Trickett is returning to competition after a brief retirement with her sights set on London glory.
The Kookaburras were on a high going into the Beijing Olympics having won their first ever gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. After suffering a tough 3-2 loss to Spain in the Beijing semifinal, the Australians were unable to defend their Olympic title but stormed to a 6-2 victory over The Netherlands to win the bronze medal. The Kookaburras have medalled at every Games since Barcelona 1992.
Anna Meares has the full set of medals from two Olympics. In 2004 she created history by becoming the first Australian women to win track cycling gold.
