Fight Club, NTC & 2011 recap

21 January 2012, Water Polo

Hey guys, I hope everyone had a fun and safe Christmas and New Year.

Just a quick recap of the end of last year...

I had the NTC challenge that was held in Newcastle. In preparation for this the QAS team and I had a camp at the Gold Coast. This was to get the team together away from Brisbane life for something different, a little bit of team bonding. We took part in beach runs/ swims, yoga, and psychology sessions with our psych. It wasn’t all just fun and games; we also went to the prophecy fight club, a centre of training excellence in Muay Thai, MMA and boxing. Chris, one of the trainers there took us for some pretty hard sessions that he does with some of his athletes. This really got the team closer together, going through a little bit of pain encouraging and pushing each other through it.  Overall the camp was pretty successful and something we would definitely look at doing again.

As for the Tournament we started very strong and won our first 5 games. Our last round game we lost to WAIS but did enough to make the final. It was a good opportunity to play a lot of our younger less experienced players in this game. The grand final was against NSWIS (New South Wales Institute of Sport) who we beat in penalty shoot out in the rounds. The game again went to extra time and unfortunately we came out second best. Although we came second we were very proud of our efforts and I was privileged enough to receive the MVP award for the tournament.

From the NTC a squad of 26 was selected and 18 were invited to the third Olympic camp in Sydney against the Japanese Men’s team for a week. 4 others and myself from the QAS team made the cut including my brother BJ. The camp again was very beneficial allowing us to work on the systems we have in place against quality opposition.

After the camp everyone had a few days off for Christmas but this wasn’t a holiday. Some selected squad members where invited to The Tom Hoad cup tournament in Perth starting on the 27th Dec. This was also another chance to impress in front of the national coach. The rest of the squad who didn’t go including myself had a couple training session from then up until New Years Eve. The reason for not much time off was we had a training camp in Sydney against the USA men’s team from the 2nd to the 7th and following that the Pan Pacs in Melbourne.
